The Retreat – Don Bosco, Yercaud · Forming Minds & Hearts in the Shevaroy Hills Since 1950
Jnanodaya Salesian Institute of Philosophy is a house of immediate post-novitiate training for the Salesian Provinces of India. Founded in 1950, The Retreat — Don Bosco was initially a Studentate of Theology (1950–52), then a Novitiate (from 1953), and since 1958 a Studentate of Philosophy.
From June 2013 onwards, as suggested by Università Pontificia Salesiana, Rome, the institute offers a two-year Diploma Course in Philosophy, aimed at the human maturing, intellectual preparation, and deepening of the consecrated life of the young Salesian confrere.
"Let Him Illumine Our Mind!" — Ṛg Veda 3.62.10 (Gāyatrī Mantra). For us Christian students of Philosophy, Christ is the Supreme Luminary who enlightens everyone born into the world (Cf. Jn 1:9). The emblem bears four symbols:

President
Welcome to Jnanodaya Salesian Institute of Philosophy, Yercaud — a venerable seat of intellectual discernment, fraternal communion, and spiritual illumination. In the Salesian heritage handed down to us by our father St. John Bosco, philosophical studies are not merely an academic exercise, but a transformative quest for truth that shapes the whole person — mind, conscience, and heart.
Rooted in our sacred motto ‘Let Him Illumine Our Mind’, philosophical formation enables candidates to the priesthood to enter into fruitful dialogue with human culture, science, and the spiritual treasures of India. In a contemporary world often challenged by moral relativism and digital distraction, Jnanodaya prepares reflective, empathetic, and courageous shepherds who can critically examine truth and illuminate society with the supreme light of Christ.
Greetings from The Retreat – Don Bosco, nestled high in the tranquil mountains of Yercaud. For over seven decades, Jnanodaya has served as a welcoming home, a school of philosophical wisdom, and a temple of prayer for post-novitiate Salesian confreres from across India and abroad.
Affiliated with the Università Pontificia Salesiana (UPS), Rome, our two-year curriculum harmonizes rigorous intellectual inquiry with authentic community living and active pastoral outreach. Here, amidst silence, study, youth apostolate, and brotherhood, students cultivate the love of wisdom and the pastoral charity needed for consecrated Salesian life. We warmly invite every visitor and scholar to explore our mission of truth and accompaniment.
